Sigiriya will be declared the first eco-friendly tourist destination in the country free of plastic and polythene this year Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga stated.
He said the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Development Authority are working in collaboration with institutions such as the Central Cultural Fund and the Wildlife Department in the effort.
Minister Ranatunga who visited the Sigiriya Tourist Zone Wednesday (16) further stated that the government is also taking steps to expand the facilities required by local and foreign tourists visiting Sigiriya.
There are plans to expand drinking water, sanitation and parking facilities without any harm to the the Sigiriya ecosystem. The Minister also said that discussions are underway with various parties to obtain the relevant provisions.
The Minister said that the government has also taken steps to establish domestic air facilities to Sigiriya for the convenience of local and foreign tourists and that steps have already been taken to expedite the resolution of the problems faced by those engaged in the tourism industry in the Sigiriya tourist area.
